Miriam’s Journey
Finding a new beginning.
Miriam*, a single mother from Afghanistan, arrived in Edmonton with her five young children, looking for a fresh start. They reached out to our helpline, uncertain about where to stay and their status in Canada. IslamicFamily extended a helping hand, securing them a temporary home at a local hotel and providing meals during their initial days in Canada. It wasn't an easy start, as they initially faced the threat of deportation. However, with the support of a local imam and the dedicated efforts of IslamicFamily, they successfully appealed the decision and were granted the opportunity to stay in Canada.
Our community came together to provide financial assistance and donations, while IslamicFamily helped them find a comfortable apartment. Local organizations chipped in to furnish their new home with essential furniture and bedding.Today, this family is steadily settling into their new life in Canada. The children are eager to start school when the time comes, and their mother is excited about building connections within the Afghan community in the area. In our caring community, this family has found a supportive network, and their story represents the power of compassion and unity in helping newcomers adapt to life in Canada. Together, we've played a part in their journey to a brighter future.

Kareem’s Resilience
Overcoming mobility challenges.
A call came in on the helpline from Kareem* who had recently undergone a life-altering operation resulting in the amputation of both of his legs. He found himself in a difficult situation, residing in a hotel after being evicted from his home while he was in the hospital.
Our compassionate staff worked diligently to piece together the details of his predicament. They arranged an intake appointment for him to secure housing through E4C(opens in a new tab), a charitable organization on the mission to eliminate poverty in our communities. During this crucial step, two staff members accompanied him to his appointment with E4C, ensuring he had the support he needed.Additionally, our staff conducted a thorough assessment of Kareem's circumstances. While he was receiving support from Alberta Works, his financial situation was precarious, as he had to cover the cost of his extended hotel stay, which had accumulated to a significant amount.
Recognizing the vulnerability of Kareem, who had no one to turn to for help and couldn't consider staying at a shelter due to his medical condition, our staff stepped in. It was hoped that, following the successful outcome of his appointment, he would have a housing unit available for him to move into in the near future. Our community and staff showed collaboration and compassion by trying to help make a positive impact on Kareem's well-being, as well as supporting him on his journey toward stability and recovery.
