Our Projects

Over the past few years, IslamicFamily has been  involved in several local, provincial and national projects in partnership with other organizations, individuals and artists. These projects have allowed IslamicFamily to lead the way in various areas of research, program development and creative showcasing of community talent.

THE CANADIAN PRAYER RUG

Rug weaving is a distinctive art form that often expresses the cultural and traditional landscape of a place and people. Weavers use local materials and familiar motifs, designs and patterns to intertwine the stories of their community on one large canvas. In 2016, The Green Room’s Leadership Team sought to produce a locally designed and woven prayer rug that showcased and celebrated the stories of the Edmonton Muslim community.

THE HOME EXHIBIT

HOME was a 2017 art exhibit by The Green Room’s Leadership Team that explored the complexities of home and belonging. The art exhibit was hosted at the Bleeding Heart Art Space and included pieces of photography, poetry, visual art and live performances. Of the exhibit, one participant writes "through each step of The Green Room’s HOME exhibit I gained greater courage and acceptance of a topic I’ve struggled with my whole life: where and what is home for me? I explored this question in my poetry and art through themes of childhood grief and trauma, self-compassion and self-acceptance, gratitude and spirituality. Viewing others’ submissions and hearing their pieces in the HOME exhibit reminded me I am not alone in my quest to understand identity and belonging, and that through the sharing of our stories we find a new home in community.”

SENIORS RESEARCH PROJECT

In partnership with Jordana Salma (Faculty of Nursing, University of Alberta), IslamicFamily has acted as the primary community research partner exploring the social and mental health needs of aging Muslim seniors in Edmonton. Phase one of the research project was completed in May 2018, with more information and findings to come.

FOSTER & KINSHIP CARE PROGRAM

Over the past two years, IslamicFamily has been tirelessly advocating with the provincial Ministry of Child and Family Services to offer further support to Muslim-identified families and children that are in care, or those with open CFS files. IslamicFamily also hopes to raise further awareness of the religious importance in Islam of becoming certified foster and kinship providers. For further information on how to become a certified foster or kinship provider, please email foster@ifssa.ca
